Recent Advances in Large-scale Structure Statistics

1997

I review the most recent redshift surveys used to probe the large scale structure of the Universe. Then I provide an overview of some of the statistical tools used to describe the galaxy distribution, trying to connect these measures with some of the statistics used in the mainstream of spatial statistics. Special topics include intensity functions, topology, and second-order statistics (2-point correlation function, K-function).

On the deceleration of Fanaroff-Riley Class I jets: mass loading of magnetized jets by stellar winds.

In this paper we present steady-state RMHD simulations that include a mass-load term to study the process of jet deceleration. The mass-load mimics the injection of a proton-electron plasma from stellar winds within the host galaxy into initially pair plasma jets, with mean stellar mass-losses ranging from $10^{-14}$ to $10^{-9}\,{M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}$. The spatial jet evolution covers $\sim 500\,{\rm pc}$ from jet injection in the grid at 10~pc from the jet nozzle. Our simulations use a relativistic gas equation of state and a pressure profile for the ambient medium. Massive relic galaxies prefer dense environments

We study the preferred environments of $z \sim 0$ massive relic galaxies ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$ galaxies with little or no growth from star formation or mergers since $z \sim 2$). Significantly, we carry out our analysis on both a large cosmological simulation and an observed galaxy catalogue. Working on the Millennium I-WMAP7 simulation we show that the fraction of today massive objects which have grown less than 10 per cent in mass since $z \sim 2$ is ~0.04 per cent for the whole massive galaxy population with $M_\star > 10^{10}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$. Fully cosmological virtual massive galaxies at z=0: kinematical, morphological, and stellar population characterisation

We present the results of a numerical adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a $\Lambda CDM$ cosmology. We focus on the analysis of the main properties of massive galaxies ($M_* > 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) at $z=0$. For all the massive virtual galaxies we carry out a careful study of their one dimensional density, luminosity, velocity dispersion, and stellar population profiles. In order to best compare with observational data, the method to estimate the velocity dispersion is calibrated by using an approach similar to that performed in the observations, based on the stellar populations of the simulated galaxies. AbstractStudying the properties of the few compact massive galaxies that exist in the local Universe (Trujillo et al. 2009) might provide a closer look to the nature of their high redshift (z ≥ 1.0) massive counterparts. The broad-line radio galaxy J2114+820

In the frame of the study of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, we have made radio observations of J2114+820, a low power radio galaxy with an angular size of 6'. Its radio structure basically consists of a prominent core, a jet directed in north-west direction and two extended S-shaped lobes. We have also observed the optical counterpart of J2114+820, a bright elliptical galaxy with a strong unresolved central component. The optical spectrum shows broad emission lines. The Near-Infrared Surface Brightness Distribution of NGC4696

We present H-band observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC4696, the brightest member of the Centaurus cluster of galaxies. We have measured its light profile, using a two-dimensional fitting algorithm, out to a radius of 180 arcsec (37 h^{-1}_{70} kpc). The profile is well described by a de Vaucouleurs law, with an effective radius of 35.3 +/- 1.0 h^{-1}_{70} kpc. There is no need for the extra free parameter allowed by a Sersic law. Allowing for a variation of 0.3% in the sky level, the profile obtained is compatible with data from 2MASS. The profile shows no sign of either a truncation or an extended halo.

The star formation activity in cosmic voids

Using a sample of cosmic voids identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we study the star formation activity of void galaxies. The properties of galaxies living in voids are compared with those of galaxies living in the void shells and with a control sample, representing the general galaxy population. Void galaxies appear to form stars more efficiently than shell galaxies and the control sample. This result can not be interpreted as a consequence of the bias towards low masses in underdense regions, as void galaxy subsamples with the same mass distribution as the control sample also show statistically different specific star formation rates.
